A glass of cold buttermilk can be a lifesaver on a hot afternoon. You come back from outside, open the fridge, pour yourself a glass and, honestly, sometimes that’s all you want. The sole drawback is the boredom that creeps in from having the same concoction all the time. Thankfully, it just needs a little something to rejuvenate it. All that you need are some new spices to transform it. Begin by getting yourself a chilled glass of amul butter milk.
1. Mint And Cumin For A Familiar Taste
This is a recipe for those who are fond of spiced buttermilk made the old-fashioned way. Start off by taking out of the fridge a glass of buttermilk. Then pour it into a glass or jug and proceed to add freshly chopped mint and stir it in. Then put into the mixture half a teaspoon of roasted cumin powder plus a bit of black salt. Mix everything very well and take a taste. If the cumin is not quite enough, then you can add some more gradually to your liking. Remember not to add the entire teaspoon all at once, as the taste of cumin can be quite overpowering.
Should you only find whole ground cumin seed available, then dry roast about a teaspoon of it over a low flame. Be gentle with them; keep turning the seeds for just about a minute until they smell nutty. Let the roasted seeds cool first, and then break them by grinding them with a spoon’s back, or by using a mortar and pestle. A few slightly chunky bits are completely fine.
2. Add Coriander And Fresh Ginger
With the use of coriander and ginger in your buttermilk you would be able to introduce a new taste to the recipe that you are preparing. One tablespoon of coriander leaves is needed along with some ginger. However, the quantity of ginger may be modified as per individual preference.
Combine them in your buttermilk with one-half teaspoon roasted cumin powder and a bit of black salt. Keep the glass in the refrigerator for 10 minutes before consuming it. That little bit of resting time lets the ginger and coriander flavour the drink properly. If you’re doing online grocery shopping, add a small bunch of coriander and some ginger while they’re fresh.
3. Use All Three Together
In case you do not know which flavour is good, just go for a blend. Prepare it yourself by mixing parts of mint leaves, coriander seed powder, ginger, cumin powder, and black salt. Just blend chilled buttermilk and all those ingredients in!
You can stir everything by hand, but if you prefer a completely smooth drink, blend it for 5–10 seconds. Don’t blend it for ages or the herbs can make the colour quite intense. Taste it after blending. Too sharp? Add more amul butter milk. Too mild? A little extra cumin or ginger should sort it out.
Chill It Before Serving
That sounds quite obvious, but it affects the taste. Flavoured buttermilk has a wonderful taste when served chilled. If you prepare the buttermilk in advance, cover it and refrigerate. When serving it, mix it well as the herbs and spices settle.
Keep The Basics Around
You really only need mint, coriander, ginger, cumin and black salt for these three combinations. If you’re doing online grocery shopping, add them along with your normal vegetables and household items.
Instamart is one option for ordering groceries and fresh ingredients, depending on availability in your area. No fancy equipment, no long ingredient list. Just a chilled glass, a few spices and whichever flavour combination you’re in the mood for.
